The most important housekeeping that you, the computer user, should do is to ensure that your data is backed up. Hard drive failures are a far from uncommon occurrence and your data can be lost as a result. Many computer repairers offer "data recovery" but a mechanical failure of a drive will occasionally place this kind of recovery work way beyond the ability of other than a specialist data recovery clinic...at a very high £cost!

 

Viruses and malware are still a major problem and even the best anti-virus programs cannot absolutely guarantee to prevent infections. After all the virus creator is always one step ahead of the anti-virus program producers. Watch out for those possibly dodgy emails and websites! Do however make sure that a reputable anti-virus program is installed on your system.

Occasionally, however, overheating can occur, particularly in hot weather, so ensure that a good airflow exists around the body of the pc or laptop.

 

Do fit an anti mains surge adapter. These devices are usually in the form of a multi three pin mains adapter and filter out surges on the mains caused by lightning etc. Electronic components are very prone to damage by mains spikes and a replacement mainboard etc may be £costly.
